Blair's NHS will adopt the best of the old and the new
Article Abstract:
The Labour party will not reverse all the reforms of the National Health Service (NHS) made in recent years, according to party leader Tony Blair. However, it will end GP fund-holding in its current form and the NHS internal market. It does not support long-term contracts for the private sector to manage whole hospitals for the NHS, and will also look closely at private practice in the NHS. Annual contracts will be replaced with longer-term rolling 'comprehensive health agreements.'

There may be trouble ahead
Article Abstract:
Some observers feel that the UK's National Health Service (NHS) is heading for an extremely traumatic period in its history. There are certainly severe financial difficulties, and other issues, including the medical staffing of wards and the rise in emergency admissions, are likely to cause serious problems. It would be extremely damaging to the Conservative government if a crisis were to emerge in the NHS shortly before a general election.
