Does Ireland's destiny lie with a woman from the north?
Article Abstract:
It seems likely that Mary McAleese, who is from Northern Ireland, will become the next president of the Irish Republic. Her election would be particularly significant in symbolizing the advance of nationalism and the decline of Unionism. A Catholic from Belfast, Northern Ireland, she has become one of the most influential women in the city. She studied law at Queen's University in Belfast, and later became a broadcaster with RTE in Dublin, Ireland. The Protestant establishment was greatly shocked when she became director of the Institute of Legal Studies at Queen's University.

Churchman seeks to break Ulster 'siege.' (the Rt Rev Dr John Dunlop, the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church)
Article Abstract:
The Right Rev Dr John Dunlop, who was installed as Moderator of Ulster's Presbyterian Church in Jun 1992, advocates mutual respect between Protestants and Catholics in Ireland. He says that Protestants in Northern Ireland are portrayed as the majority, but they feel themselves in a minority in Ireland as a whole. Northern Protestants have developed a defensive stance and many Presbyterians have moved away from Belfast. He believes that assent of the majority in Northern Ireland is the requisite for unity.

Can they do it again?
Article Abstract:
The prospects for a peace settlement in Northern Ireland are generally regarded as having improved following the return to power of Fianna Fail in the Irish Republic. The previous Fianna Fail administration, headed by Albert Reynolds, played a valuable role in reducing conflict in Northern Ireland, and this may have influenced some Irish voters. It is possible that new Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern will appoint Albert Reynolds as a peace envoy, a move which would be welcomed by republicans.
