Don't let me be misunderstood
Article Abstract:
The music of singer Nina Simone played an integral part in the civil rights movement in the US during the 1960s. She grew up in a relatively integrated community, but gradually began to encounter racism. Her songs started to reflect the violence of the civil rights struggle in the 1960s. This was particularly the case with the song 'Mississippi Goddam,' composed in response to the bombing of a church in Alabama in which four black girls died. She became increasingly bitter, and in the 1970s retreated into exile in Barbados, Liberia and Europe.

Fusion or confusion?
Article Abstract:
Jazz purists were very critical of the jazz fusion music developed by Creed Taylor through CTI Records. Following the success of Miles Davis's album 'Bitches Brew' in 1970, many other jazz musicians moved to jazz fusion, and CTI Records produced music which was approaching jazz-funk. In fact, CTI Records played a very valuable role in maintaining the careers of talented jazz musicians who were seeking higher salaries than they had been receiving in the 1960s. Furthermore, CTI also launched the careers of Bob James and Grover Washington.

And that is why I choose to sing the blues
Article Abstract:
Performing at Cook County Jail in autumn 1970 was an intimidating experience, according to BB King. The prisoners who attended the performance were initially rather rowdy, but King and his musicians were able to calm the situation with a succession of slow ballads. King feels sympathy for anyone who has lost their freedom, and was very deeply affected by visiting the jail. He subsequently performed in other jails and set up the organization 'Inmate Rehabilitation and Recreation.'
