Farmer sues on genetic dangers
Article Abstract:
A farmer who farms organic produce is launching a legal battle against the government over trials of genetically engineered crops being conducted next to his farm. The Ministry of Agriculture is sponsoring the research institute to conduct genetic trials, which is unfortunately located next to the organic farm owned and run by farmer Guy Watson in Devon. The Soil Association has said that the organic certification on the farm could be lost if his produce were to become contaminated. It is hoped that the judicial review will make its conclusions rapidly as the maize is due to pollinate in July. Guy Watson is being supported in his challenge by Friends of the Earth.

Stressed, misunderstood and lonely: the farmer's lot is not a happy one
Article Abstract:
Farmers frequently experience emotional problems, and their suicide rate is much greater than average. This prompted the Samaritans to establish the Rural Outreach programme, which encourages the effective advertising and coordination of local events for farmers and provides information about services such as the National Farmers' Union. Farmers often live in isolated locations, and have a rather negative image among the general public. These factors can have a negative impact on their mental health.

Let the farmer out of the pen
Article Abstract:
Taxpayers will provide 100 pounds sterling for every acre of EC land by 1994. The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) gives farmers greater subsidies for higher production levels and requires detailed bureaucracy. Positive restructuring is needed. Professor Tangermann of Gottingen University in Germany suggested decoupling: a compensation package based on historical production, with separate policies for environmental and countryside schemes.
