Don't put your daughter on the screen, Mrs Worthington
Article Abstract:
There are a number of moral problems to be addressed when considering performance versions of Nabokov's novel 'Lolita' and Henry James's novella 'The Turn of the Screw.' Both these works address the corruption of minors, and it is therefore difficult to use actors who are minors in performance versions of them. In comparing the film version of 'Lolita' and the theatre version of 'The Turn of the Screw,' it can be established that theatre is a much more responsible medium than film. It is also imaginatively releasing.

Wilde: about the man
Article Abstract:
There have been a number of films and plays recently which show Oscar Wilde in very different ways. These varying interpretations highlight the way in which Wilde, an extremely contradictory figure, has always been simplified and refashioned to fit in with the psychological or ideological climate of the time. His story has connections with many contemporary preoccupations, and this makes it inevitable that the present seems to be placed under scrutiny too.

Such things as dreams are made on
Article Abstract:
Modern theatre directors frequently use the text of Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' as an excuse for looking at contemporary anxieties. The play has a very long interpretative tradition, and some modern productions have really been a comment on earlier interpretations, rather than a staging of the play itself. The play still produces many various by-products.
