Green power in the world's saloon bar
Article Abstract:
Wars have been the traditional way of allowing states to establish and retain their power over citizens. However, this situation is now starting to change, with latest developments being reflected in the recent incident in Polynesia, where Greenpeace has protested against French nuclear weapons testing. Greenpeace has been able to harness world opinion to create a very sensitive situation for France, traditionally a powerful country. The consumer boycott has become a very strong weapon, and states can no longer take their power for granted.

Hockney now
Article Abstract:
The Vermeer exhibition held in the Hague in 1996 was extremely impressive, according to artist David Hockney. Before attending the exhibition, he had become immersed in abstract, figureless paintings which had no general appeal, but now seems to be taking a more positive approach, and has been focusing on flower paintings and portraits. He has in particular been making use of the wonderful natural light in California. It seems that, through Vermeer, he is returning to 'yellow hope.'

Compassion comes before contentment
Article Abstract:
Labour party leader Tony Blair must focus on establishing a strong compassionate base if he is to be a really successful politician, according to US liberal Professor John Kenneth Galbraith. In the US and the UK, people are now living in a large community of well-being which has political power, does not require the state and has strong views on the culture of government. However, there is still a growing sense of insecurity, especially among the middle classes.
