Wait for the calm to judge the storm
Article Abstract:
UK Chancellor Gordon Brown is coming under increasing pressure as the economy slows down rapidly. He must now show that he has clear policies to deal with impending economic problems. In particular, he must consider whether interest rates should be falling faster and whether the economic slowdown will turn into a full-scale recession and thus damage the government's cautious tax and spending policies. He will seek to emphasize that his plans for government borrowing will be resilient to the economic downturn.

Women lose up to 10bn pounds sterling under Labour
Article Abstract:
The economic policies of UK Chancellor Gordon Brown could lead to women becoming as much as 10 billion pounds sterling worse off. Furthermore, the increased 'New Deal' investment in welfare-to-work programmes will bring many more advantages to men than to women. The most damaging measure for women will be the planned 'working families' tax credit.' This benefit will be paid directly to the main earner in the household, and will therefore mainly go to men.
