Gilbert Hoblit gets the blues
Article Abstract:
Filmmaker Gilbert Hoblit accepts that law enforcement is a recurring motif in his films, a reflection of the fact that his father was head of the Berkeley FBI. He often shows policemen in a dangerous world in which they cannot even place their full trust in their close partners. In his film 'Fallen,' the detective played by Denzel Washington lives in a world full of threat. In making this film, Hoblit was assisted by the fact that he constantly watches people through the eyes of a policeman.

Sick stories of sin and slaughter
Article Abstract:
Film-maker Abel Ferrara believes that the Vietnam war, which had a very significant impact on his adolescence, still exerts an influence on his films. For the film-maker, films offer an ideal opportunity to create unusual circumstances and see how certain people react. His latest films, 'The Funeral' and 'The Addiction,' deal with sin and redemption, and suggest that violent impulses are in everybody. Ferrara regards making films as a way of improving his life.

Why he never sold his soul
Article Abstract:
It can be hard for a film producer to make a stand against the constantly falling standards in the industry, according to John Carpenter. He has struggled for many years to remain true to his art, and this has meant that he has had to live through difficult times. He finds film producing extremely mentally and physically demanding, and has often suffered from stress. He is now considering taking up a career in the visual arts instead.
