Dozens killed, hundreds shot, as Middle East hopes are buried in battle of Joseph's Tomb
Article Abstract:
The Middle East peace process seems close to collapse as clashes between settlers and civilians and Israeli forces and Palestinian police break out across the West Bank and Gaza Strip. A battle to defend Joseph's Tomb in Nablus left six dead and seven wounded, while overall at least 24 Palestinians and 11 Israeli soldiers have been killed. The conflict was sparked off by Israel's decision to open a new entrance to an ancient tunnel close to the holy sites in the old city of Jerusalem.

Settlers vow to resist Hebron troop pull-out
Article Abstract:
There is considerable tension in Hebron, the last West Bank Arab city still under Israeli occupation, as Jewish settlers seek to prevent the redeployment of Israeli troops. The settlers are concerned about the likely impact of a peace agreement between Israel and Palestine, and do not feel that there is any prospect of peaceful co-existence in Hebron. There are now only 40 Jewish families among 150,000 Muslims living in the centre of Hebron.

Israelis agree to Palestine state - in theory
Article Abstract:
The Israeli government seems to be coming to terms with the reality of a divided country, with prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu apparently now ready to continue the Oslo peace programme. This is a very marked change of position from that originally taken up by Netanyahu when he first came to power. However, it is expected that there will be a great deal of tough negotiating before the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is finally resolved.
