Drama at the speed of light
Article Abstract:
Paul Pyant, lighting director, is known for his painterly and practical approach to theatre lighting. Pyant, who is currently lighting a multitude of shows, is recognised for his colourist approach and explains his work by referral to old Dutch masters. He trained in stage management and theatre lighting at RADA and then worked at Glyndebourne for 20 years, the experience giving him a realistic approach to the practicalities, as well as the design of lighting.

Suite sounds of the city
Article Abstract:
Classical music has traditionally kept itself at a distance from urban life, even when concert halls are situated in the middle of cities. Some classical composers have managed to overcome their fear and hatred of the city, but they have still not portrayed its most unpleasant aspects, preferring to stick with a pastoral idyll. However, some modern composers are now looking at ways of converting the city's sounds into music using digital sampling.

Don Giovanni: the devil may care
Article Abstract:
Belgian director Guy Joosten is currently working with the ENO on a new production of 'Don Giovanni.' This is the first time that he has directed a production in the UK, but he has already had considerable experience with opera elsewhere. He is determined not to fit in with conventional expectations, although is not deliberately intending to shock.
