From the respected to the reviled
Article Abstract:
The status of teachers varies considerably from country to country. In Germany, for example, teachers must study for a long time, there is strong competition for teaching jobs and salaries are relatively high. In contrast, teachers have a negative image in the US and are often blamed for poor student performance. Teachers' salaries have improved in Spain, but the status of the profession remains low. Teachers have traditionally been highly respected in Japan, but teachers there are now facing significant challenges as students begin to rebel against the very ordered system.

Keeping the home fires learning
Article Abstract:
The 120 members of the Libertarian Family Network, created in 1996 by two home-educating families based in Devon, England, believe that children should be treated as individuals and should not have to follow adult rules. The group's philosophy allows children to behave as they wish, and places strong emphasis on non-coercive education. The members point out that children become caring, capable and tolerant when they are permitted to make their own choices and are encouraged to express their own views.
