Dream machine that seduced a nation
Article Abstract:
The UK's National Lottery, which has now been running for a year, continues to attract enormous sums of money every week. More than 1 billion pounds sterling has been distributed to a wide range of projects as a result. However, some observers continue to express concern that large amounts of money are going to projects which have no relevance to ordinary people, and that funding is being concentrated in certain areas, often overlooking inner cities. A key concern now is whether there will continue to be enough causes regarded as worthy of receiving National Lottery funds.

Article Abstract:
Rock musician Tom Robinson became well known in the 1970s with songs which expressed strong views on issues such as sexism, racism and homophobia. He is still a supporter of the Labour party, but now has other concerns which are reflected in his music. These include the politics of the music industry, especially the control exerted by critics and radio stations. He believes that more opportunities should be given to less well-known musicians, and for this reason is supporting the 1996 National Music Festival.

Home sweet homes
Article Abstract:
There have been a number of scandals over recent years relating to the management of residential care facilities for children, and the issue of how to run a successful home for very vulnerable children has now become a very sensitive one. At the most successful establishments, workers are highly motivated, and are determined to provide a happy and stable environment for the children. They focus on social skills which could allow the children to return to their own families or to go to a foster family.
