Take a walk on the wild side
Article Abstract:
Ramblers have found it more difficult to protest against the blocking of public rights of way by hostile landowners since the introduction of the Criminal Justice Act in 1994. Under this, trespassers can be arrested by the police and charged with a criminal offence if they deliberately go onto private property in order to cause disruption. Rambling is traditionally seen as a peaceful activity, but in fact it has a strong political element, being connected with environmental concerns and a desire to protect old traditions.

Mandela's shadow
Article Abstract:
President Nelson Mandela of South Africa will open an exhibition of the work of Alfie Mangaliso Kumalo, the photographer who has been taking pictures of him since his youth, in Paris on July 17 1996. The photographer, who was born in 1930, took up newspaper photography somewhat late in his life, because of his positive attitude despite the difficulties encountered by a black man. According to David Sandison, who worked with him on the Johannesburg Star, almost all Kumalo's photography is associated with politics.

The nation has heard only one side in the Battle of the Liars
Article Abstract:
The controversy surrounding claims that former UK Conservative MP Neil Hamilton received money in return for asking questions in parliament has not really given much attention to the role of Mohamed Al-Fayed, owner of Harrods. He has admitted to attempting to bribe MPs, and is now claimed to have opened safety deposit boxes located in Harrods. It is to be hoped that the committee which is now investigating the cash-for-questions affair will probe more deeply into Al-Fayed's behaviour.
