When killing is the only escape
Article Abstract:
Some women who have suffered years of abuse from a violent husband are eventually unable to cope any more, and murder their husband. They then face a trial and imprisonment, without any opportunity to defend their actions. They can claim that they are suffering from diminished responsibility, or that they were provoked to such an extent that they lost all self-control, or that they acted in self-defence. However, all of these defences are inadequate in the case of a battered woman.

The discreet killing of the bourgeoisie
Article Abstract:
There have been a number of examples of French film directors being attracted to English murder mysteries. The most recent of these is Claude Chabrol's 'La Ceremonie,' which is based on Ruth Rendell's 'A Judgement in Stone.' It seems that he, like other directors, has been attracted to the peculiarly English nature of the story, and this has been retained, even though the action is now set in France. Other examples of this trend include Francois Truffaut's 'Les Diaboliques.'
