EU: EUROZONE CONSUMER PRICE INFLATION STEADY
Article Abstract:
The 11 countries within the eurozone reported average average annual consumer price inflation for May 2000 of 1.9%, according to European Union (EU) figures released on 19 June 2000. Despite the steady figures, figures showed a rise in consumer price inflation in Ireland, Spain and Finland, leading to concern that the economies may be overheating. As the worse inflation is occurring in the so-called peripheral economies of the eurozone, the figures are unlikely to result in calls for interest rates to be increased. However, there is concern in Ireland, which has a 5.1% inflation rate that an increate in mortgage interest payments will drive up inflation.
