Early Gatt agreement 'vital.' (John Major explains reasons for agreeing world trade deal)

British Prime Minister John Major spoke at the Lord Mayor's banquet, London about the importance of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (Gatt.) He said that international agreement could increase the world economy by $200 billion. European industries of textiles, chemicals, books, discs and software would benefit. He re-iterated the government's aim of sustainable, non-inflationary growth. Mr Major said that people in work should make pay sacrifices to help others back to employment.

British Prime Minister John Major told the 1922 Committee that the Government's top priority was economic recovery. He referred to a recovery package connected with Chancellor Norman Lamont's Autumn Statement on Nov 12, 1992. He asked for party unity and traditional loyalty. He said that Britain needed allies in the EC and that voting on the Treaty on European Union in the Commons should consider its merits. He expects a Commons win at the vote on Nov 04, 1992.

Major wants tough, swift response if Serbs attack: Britain gives ground on Security Council resolution to enforce Bosnian no-fly zone
Article Abstract:
British Prime Minister John Major hopes that any Serbian attack on the UN Protection Force in Bosnia would immediately receive UN-authorised retaliation. Some ministers wanted frontiers to be sealed, embassies to be closed and all international communications severed. Plans are being made to enforce the ban on military flights over Bosnia, to establish civilian safe havens and prevent the spread of war to Macedonia and Kosovo.
