East End or West Side - home is where the art is

Article Abstract:

Artist Rachel Whiteread feels that she has a very complex relationship to public sculpture. She was invited by the Public Art Trust in New York, NY, to work in Manhattan shortly after her 1993 work 'House,' but took some time to find a site with which she felt comfortable. She is now involved in casting the inside of a water tower on the roof of a seven-storey building in the gallery district of Manhattan. She is not yet certain how the tower, the largest object she has ever cast in resin, will appear in changing light conditions.

Why I'm happy to 'play God' with your food

Article Abstract:

Scientists working on transgenic plants are confident that there are no hidden dangers in this technology. They believe that agriculture based on genetics, rather than chemistry, will play a key role in ensuring that food supplies will be protected and environmental damage through the use of pesticides avoided. The genes added to plants when they are genetically engineered are very well understood, and it is therefore not possible to claim that scientists do not understand the consequences of their actions.

Taking a walk on the wild side of Sicily

Article Abstract:

It is possible to gain a lot of energy from solitude and independence, according to artist Richard Long. He has undertaken lengthy expeditions to remote parts of the world, where he has produced works that blend in with the local surroundings. Most recently, he was walked through Sicily, where he has created mud drawings and stone sculptures. Walking long distances can be physically demanding, but this approach to art is also very relaxing and imaginative.
