Some drugs are heralded as being very effective cures for certain medical conditions, while others are criticised for being dangerous, especially when there is extensive publicity surrounding cases where people suffer permanent damage from taking them. The only real difference between these drugs is that the first category come legally from drug companies, while the second category are obtained illegally and do not have impressive-sounding medically-based names. In neither case is it possible to predict the long-term impact of using these drugs, so the present legal approach to them is not particularly rational.

Many countries have copied the wide-ranging workfare programmes in operation in Wisconsin in some form. In the UK, this can be seen in the welfare-to-work programme that is set to begin in Apr 1998. Official figures indicate that Wisconsin's workfare programmes have reduced the number of people on welfare benefits by 70% since 1987. However, some observers point out that it may be necessary in the longer term to adopt a less strict approach to work-avoidance, as politicians cannot afford to be seen to be inflicting great damage on vulnerable families.

Article Abstract:
Environmentalists in the US are very unlikely to see much success with their No Buying Day campaign, which aims to make people aware of the very high levels of consumption in the US. They claim that shopping is a disease, and that people should be aware that they cannot buy happiness. In fact, adopting this stance merely serves to alienate people from the environmental movement. Shopping is the leading leisure activity, and ordinary people generally object very strongly to being told what they can and cannot do with their leisure time.
