Egypt declares war on the press
Article Abstract:
The Egyptian government has been taking very firm action against journalists, even though it places great emphasis on the fact that Egypt is a democracy. Military prosecutors have banned reporters from writing about the murders of nine foreigners outside the Cairo National Museum in Sep 1997, and Thomas Cromwell, the editor of the independent Middle East Times, based in Cairo, Egypt, was detained at the city's airport and deported to Athens, Greece, without explanation on Aug 22, 1997.

Mubarak's law cuts off foreign funding to all human rights groups
Article Abstract:
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's new 'Law of Association' is having a negative impact on the country's human rights groups and non-governmental organizations. Under this legislation, they are not permitted to receive funding from abroad without permission from the Egyptian Minister of Social Affairs. Negad Borai, of the Group for Democratic Development, believes that Mubarak can only create stability in Egypt if he is willing to give Egyptians a more democratic way of life.

The infantile nonsense of the Downing Street 'lie machine.'
Article Abstract:
It is a cause for considerable concern that Alastair Campbell, the official spokesman of UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, has been very critical of media coverage of the Nato bombing of Kosovo, Yugoslavia. He appears willing to overlook the fact that Nato bombing caused casualties in Kosovo because pilots had to fly so high that they could not identify their targets properly. Campbell's remarks were clearly designed to inhibit the reporting of the truth.
