Elen's game
Article Abstract:
Terry George's film 'Some Mother's Son,' which was the most popular film shown at the summer 1996 Edinburgh Film Festival, is shortly to open in the UK. It deals with the background to the 1981 hunger strikes in H-block of the Maze prison, in which 10 IRA men died. Particular attention is given to the mothers of two prisoners. The film seems to sanitise the IRA, not reflecting the movement's total willingness to kill innocent people at random. It is also misguided in the way in which it pretends to show real history but actually simply portrays a standard conflict between good and evil.

Publishing upside down
Article Abstract:
The performance of the publishing industry is generally very unpredictable, with success largely depending on serving specialist niches in the worldwide English-language market. The number of new books published in the UK rose by 6.8% in 1996 from 1995 to a record 101,504 titles, but there were considerable variations between sectors. Works on economics are now a larger sector than general fiction, while the computer book sector grew by 21% and the legal book sector by 30%. Modern publishers have to be able to shift large volumes of information, and fortunes are rarely made.

Home and colonial stories
Article Abstract:
The ceremonial element of the British Empire was very significant, according to historian David Cannadine, who addresses this issue in his new book, 'Ornamentalism: how the British saw their Empire.' He believes that rank was more important than race in the UK's imperial mission.
