Eta's founder calls for end to random attacks
Article Abstract:
Any people unjustly attacked by another have every right to defend themselves with any measures available to them, according to Iulen de Madariaga, who founded Basque separatist group Eta in the 1950s. However, he broke from Eta in the late 1980s, feeling that armed Basque separatists were undertaking counter-productive operations. He emphasizes that Eta did not begin as a military organization, and believes that Eta was wrong to kidnap and kill conservative local politician Miguel Angel Blanco in 1997.

Spain follows Irish example to peace in Basque Country
Article Abstract:
There is widespread support among members of many different political groups in Spain for a plan which aims to implement a peace settlement in the Basque Country. The plan, which has gained inspiration from the Irish example of all-party talks, would bring an extension of Basque rights, thus meeting some of the demands of Basque separatist organization Eta. The initial step will be to set up a working party of regional MPs to investigate a possible peace settlement.
