Even before they lose, the Tory knives are out
Article Abstract:
There will be bitter conflict within the UK Conservative party if it loses the forthcoming general election. Some observers are likely to attribute a defeat to Chancellor Kenneth Clarke, especially for his insistence in refusing to rule out membership of a single European currency, while others will blame right-wing backbenchers. It is quite widely assumed that Prime Minister John Major will announce his resignation as party leader shortly after an election defeat, but retain the position until Jun 1997. A Conservative party leadership campaign would have important implications.

AD2001: he's older and greyer, but he's still in power ...
Article Abstract:
There are some elements in the UK Conservative party who believe that there is a chance that it will win the 1997 general election and remain in power into the 21st century. If this were to happen, prime minister John Major would come close to equalling or even overtaking the 11 years in office achieved by Margaret Thatcher. Defeat in 1997 would split the Labour party, thus giving the Conservative party a better chance of retaining power in future general elections.

Infected by mad cows and Europhobes
Article Abstract:
The UK has enjoyed a strong economic recovery in 1996, but this has not led to increased support for the Conservative party. The party has been badly affected by very high levels of indiscipline among its MPs, but has been worst hit by splits over the UK's relationship with the European Union. The mishandling of the BSE crisis became the most poignant symbol of government incompetence, and attracted Eurosceptics from many different sources.
