Executive summary
Article Abstract:
U.S.-style factory outlet stores were introduced in the U.K. in the early 1990s, although factory and factory-gate shops have existed for some time. There are some 10 purpose-built facilities in the U.K., but further development is being hindered by tight planning controls. It is expected that such villages will have a total of 535 stores by the end of 1996, with sales for the year totalling some 175 million pounds sterling. It is estimated that the number of factory outlet villages in the U.K. could reach 36, with a total area of 5.6 million sq ft and sales totalling 818 million pounds sterling.

The US experience of factory outlet retailing
Article Abstract:
In the U.S., the number of factory outlet centres has grown from 108 in 1988 to 324 by 1996. Sales for the sector total $11.2 billion, with a total estimated space of 50.7 million sq ft. With the maturation of the sector, there are fewer new developments in the pipeline and a slowdown is expected. Tenants of the centres include some of America's top-selling brands, including Anne Klien, Nike and Polo/Ralph Lauren. While U.S. consumer demand continues to grow, future development within the sector is expected to be influenced by economic and social changes.

Introduction
Article Abstract:
U.S.-style factory outlet villages were launched in the U.K. in the early 1990s and are usually custom-built sites located out of town and close to motorway links. They typically feature fashion and gift shops offering manufacturers the opportunity to dispose of surplus supplies. There are around 10 outlets in the U.K., but further growth has been slowed by the government's restrictive out of town planning policies.
