Fame comes knocking at the door
Article Abstract:
Guillaume de Machaut, who lived from around 1300-1377, worked both as a composer and a poet, a combination which was common at that time. His settings of his own lyrical poems contain many musical parallels to their verse forms, and musical settings are also included in some of his longer, narrative works. He was mainly influenced by stylised conventions from the courtly love tradition, but in later life included some episodes from his own life.

Making music for single-track minds
Article Abstract:
Music historians believe that the lyric line was the most common form of early music, although they are divided on whether the words or the music were developed first. Typical manuscripts from the time do not give much of an insight into the true interdependence of words and music. It is possible to reconstruct something approaching the original pronunciation, but it is very difficult to interpret the notation.
