Searching for ways to break the class cycle
Article Abstract:
The UK's universities are beginning to consider initiatives designed to introduce young people from lower socio-economic groups to higher education. The universities are aware that this is a sensitive issue, as they do not wish to make themselves vulnerable to accusations of lowering standards. At Dundee University, Scotland, for example, all students must show that they are capable of undertaking degree-level work, while at Glamorgan University, Wales, there is the flexibility to lower the A-level entry requirement by four points.

Article Abstract:
The Miner's Arms pub in Brassington, England, has established electronic links with the University of Derby, which is seeking to bring education to local communities. The pub offers information about courses available, and also has a designated area from which local people can participate in tutorials through a videoconference link. Some 28 local people have become involved with the 'training club' since it was established in Oct 1998, and it is hoped that some will eventually enrol on part-time degree courses.
