Let us show prisoners how to be human beings
Article Abstract:
A book by John Hoskison, who was sent to Wandsworth prison after being convicted of killing a cyclist through drunk driving, gives a horrifying insight into the conditions in which prisoners live in UK jails. It is very common for prisoners to live in extremely dirty conditions and to have no privacy at all. They are not really treated like human beings by the prison officers, and are strongly discouraged from trying to establish friendly relations with prison officers. They are paid less for taking a full-time education course than for working in the prison workshop, so few can afford to further their education.

The voice of the streets is worth hearing
Article Abstract:
The Big Issue, the magazine sold by and on behalf of the homeless in the UK, contains a very wide range of interesting material. It addresses serious issues, but also looks at films, books, music and fashion. It encourages 'street poetry,' and also draws attention to the plight of people who have gone missing. Unlike many mainstream publications, it does not try to be clever or patronizing. It now sells 280,000 copies a week, more than publications such as The Spectator and The Economist.
