Fast growth in mobiles market
Article Abstract:
The greater freedom awarded to Turkish mobile phone operators Turkcell and Telsim under the recently-awarded 25-year GSM licence from the government will be used by Turkcell to add new services and more competitive tariff packages. Turkcell is now able to set its own prices and will only need to pay around 30% of gross revenues to the government, compared to two-third before. Turkcell, which has a majority stake owned by domestic company Cukurova, Ericsson of Sweden and Telecom Finland, already has an almost 80% share of the mobile market in Turkey, which totals 1.8mn subscribers. It plans to expand its subscribers by another 800,000 by the end of 1998, and has awarded a contract of around US$ 300mn to Ericsson to expand its infrastructure.

Heavy rain adds to misery of survivors
Article Abstract:
Four burial grounds are in use at Golcuk and Izmit, Turkey, for burying victims of the Turkish earthquake of Aug 1999, and a minimum of 10 additional graveyards are in use round Adapazari. Bodies are sprayed with disinfectant and buried, and many graves have no names. No Turkish soldiers can be seen seeking survivors, nor have naval officers used supply trucks to help victims, and military medical services have not been made available to the injured. Different government departments blame each other, and import duty has been demanded for rescue equipment that volunteers have brought in.
