First cracks in anti-Iraq alliance
Article Abstract:
The US government believes that United Nations (UN) approval is not required for air strikes against Iraq because Iraq has already breached the UN Gulf War ceasefire resolution, under which it was required to dismantle its weapons of mass destruction. However, UK Foreign Secretary Robin Cook has stated that it would be wise to obtain a further UN resolution before going ahead with air strikes. It appears that Cook is more reluctant than the Foreign Office, Prime Minister Tony Blair and President Bill Clinton to resort to military action.

Labour goes for the jugular
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour party is to bring a motion of no-confidence in Douglas Hogg, minister of agriculture. This will serve to heighten the atmosphere of uncertainty within parliament, and will highlight the instability of the government. The Ulster Unionists have stated that they will consider voting with the Labour party, while the Liberal Democrats will support Labour's motion, even though they disapprove of the party's tactics. Labour has deliberately not gone as far as an all-out vote of no confidence in the government.
