West African homesick blues
Article Abstract:
Music is inspired by the problems of everyday life, according to Cape Verde singer Cesaria Evora. She sings 'morna,' a musical style typical of Cape Verde. She has produced seven albums since the mid-1980s, and has become particularly popular in Scandinavia and France. Her albums have sold more than 1 million copies worldwide. She had an idea that she would be famous one day, but did not come to international public attention until the age of 47, when she was discovered by Jose da Silva in a bar in Lisbon, Portugal.

Don't talk to me about the Sixties
Article Abstract:
French singer and songwriter Francoise Hardy has been recording for 35 years, but remains most well known for her work in the 1960s. She has become something of a cult figure, and has recently released a new recording after not having done so for eight years. She is now being rediscovered as a French national symbol and as a strong representative of the pop era. She denies being influential, and tends to attempt to distance herself from show business.

One from the heart
Article Abstract:
The most successful singing is that which comes naturally and from the heart, according to Cesaria Evora, who for many years sang in bars in Mindelo, on the island of Sao Vicente, part of the Cape Verde Islands. She specialises in the sad poetic 'morna' of Cape Verde, a genre for which her mellow voice is particularly suited. She has now become extremely popular in countries including France, Japan and the US, but retains links with her past.
