For 2,000, let's repair our lovely land
Article Abstract:
Politicians would like to build a striking national monument to mark the forthcoming millennium, but do not dare to do so as they realise that such a project would probably be unpopular with voters. They would gain far more support by rebuiding the Crystal Palace, which was first constructed in 1851. This would fit in well with the national obsession with heritage, as would repairing and renovating a range of old buildings. Such as scheme would at least ensure some continued return on the investment.

Pile 'em high, flog em' cheap? Not this time, Westminster
Article Abstract:
There has been strong opposition to plans by the UK government to sell off the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, which is seen as an extremely architecturally significant building. It is very important to consider the site's future carefully, especially as it is a potential location for the Millennium Festival. Some observers are now proposing that Millennium Fund money be used to keep the Royal Naval College in public hands.

The Greenwich debate
Article Abstract:
There has been strong interest from potential purchasers of the Royal Naval College, Greewich, UK. The sale has attracted considerable controversy, with many observers believing that a significant public building of this kind should not be allowed to pass into the hands of a private owner. A joint bid from the University of Greenwich and the National Maritime Museum could prove to be the best option.
