Forget the Bear, look to the Balkans
Article Abstract:
Western governments have expressed a commitment to bringing about stability and prosperity in central and eastern Europe, uniting this region with the rest of Europe. However, this region remains in crisis, with considerable political and social instability in many different countries. Policymakers are focusing on the northern segment of the region, where economies are beginning to flourish, and are ignoring the Balkan countries such as Bulgaria and Albania, where there are severe problems.

Europe can live in wedded bliss
Article Abstract:
There are indications that a new era of greater ethnic and religious tolerance may be emerging in eastern and central Europe. Romania and Hungary, for example, have signed a treaty promising to respect existing borders and minority rights, and a similar treaty is set to be signed by Ukraine and Romania. Poland has hailed improved relations with Lithuania and Germany, and has settled its borders. There is reason to hope that Europe will be more secure and more tolerant in the 21st century.

Jospin shoulders task of restoring fortunes of the left
Article Abstract:
Socialist candidate Lionel Jospin failed to win the French presidential elections, but his party believes that it still has good prospects. He gained 47.4% of the vote, much more than had been originally expected, and has established himself as the natural leader of the left wing in the post-Mitterrand era. The party believes that defeat was almost inevitable, given that it had been in power for two full seven-year terms, but it will now benefit from a new generation of leaders.
