Article Abstract:
UK schools are now only obliged to teach art and design, music, drama and dance to pupils up to the age of 14. However, many are becoming aware of the importance of arts subjects. It has been found that participation in the arts can improve overall pupil behaviour and performance. Indeed, some experts believe that arts play a key role in helping young people to prepare for the challenges of the future. Arts give pupils a sense of success and confidence, and this helps them to achieve in other areas.

Open for business
Article Abstract:
The Open University Business School, which began operating in 1983, now has around 25,000 students worldwide. It employs 170 permanent staff in Milton Keynes, England, and has a network of 800 part-time tutors. It has become one of the largest business schools in Europe, and has a wide range of management programmes. It also undertakes extensive research work. Almost 70% of its income is derived from corporate clients, including Royal Mail and British Telecommunications.

Latest educational research is focusing on helping teachers to solve classroom management problems rather than simply on defining these problems. Schemes have included the 'Innovation and Change in education: the quality of teaching and learning' project, which involved 10 multi-disciplinary research teams. This has produced new views on aspects such as the difficulties experienced by young people settling into secondary education.
