Fourth man guilty of riot at jail: Chapel uprising began 25 days of destruction
Article Abstract:
A 12-week trial at Manchester Crown Court with evidence from over 100 witnesses found four prisoners guilty of rioting at Strangeways jail on Apr 1 1990: Paul Taylor, John Spencer, Tiny Doran and James Miller. The violence contributed to the deaths of one prison officer and two inmates. Lord Justice Woolf held an inquiry into prisons, published in Feb 1991, which concluded that the seige could have been avoided and recommended raising prison standards. Strangeways had 1,647 prisoners in buildings intended for 970. The prison governor at the time, Mr Brendan O'Friel, attacked the development of private jails and the Prison Governors' Association was concerned at the lack of progress in improving standards.

Gay activists press for German apology
Article Abstract:
Gay men were imprisoned in camps during the Holocaust, and some 9,000 may have died in those camps. There were some 100,000 gay men arrested in Austria and Germany from 1933 to 1945, with 50,000 of them jailed, and some 15,000 sent to the camps, the remainder staying in prisons. Gay rights groups are seeking an apology and compensation from the German government for these events. Work on the Holocaust tends to ignore gay men who were victims of the events.

A lifetime in jail and a burning injustice
Article Abstract:
David Blagdon was convicted of an arson attack on St Laurence church in South Hinksey, Oxfordshire, in Nov 1978, and has now served 16 years of a life sentence. He has now spent longer in prison than most convicted murderers and terrorists, even though he caused only 1,270 pounds sterling-worth of damage. Considerable efforts are now being made to have him freed, as many observers believe that he is a victim of the criminal justice system.
