France presses Britain for a commitment on EMU
Article Abstract:
The French government is hoping that it will be able to persuade the UK government to make a clear commitment in the near future on membership of European economic and monetary union (EMU). However, it is widely believed that UK Chancellor Gordon Brown will not make such a commitment, at least in public, when he meets French Economy Minister Dominique Strauss-Kahn on Oct 6, 1997. France believes that a UK committed to EMU would be more likely to support its position in its conflict with Germany over the management of the single currency.

Budget puts France firmly on EMU track
Article Abstract:
France's Socialist-led government has produced a 160 billion pounds sterling draft budget for 1998. This is a relatively neutral document which respects Maastricht targets for European monetary union without introducing radical measures. The government has been placed in this favourable position partly by the upturn in the economy and partly by choosing to ignore or delay almost all the economic commitments and schemes on which the campaign leading to the general election in May 1997 was based.
