France unites in football victory
Article Abstract:
There have been widespread celebrations in France following the national football team's victory over Croatia in the semi-finals of the 1998 World Cup. This victory has united France's many ethnic groups, especially as the team itself is multi-ethnic. The joyful national mood is about more than football, as it seems to mark the end of four or five years of national pessimism. The fact that the World Cup has been held in France and that the national team has been playing well has greatly boosted interest in football among ordinary French people.

Past problems cloud France's new image
Article Abstract:
France is keen to present itself to the rest of the world as modern and business-like. This has been particularly reflected in preparations for the 1998 World Cup. However, it is having problems overcoming its negative international image. Many foreigners regard France as being preoccupied with the past, badly served by its politicians and unwilling to change. This view ignores the fact that there have been significant changes in France's economic fortunes since the change of government in the general election on Jun 1, 1997.
