Writer and farmer Fred Archer became very popular through his books about the traditional way of life in the part of Worcestershire, England, where he lived all his life. He started writing in 1965, and 'The Distant Scene' was published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1967. He went on to write almost 30 books, many published in several editions. He began to tackle single themes in later life, and 'Muddy Boots and Sunday Suits,' published in 1973, was a sort of autobiography.

Claude Delarue was born in Geneva in 1944 and lives in Paris. His novel 'Waiting for War,' a metaphysical thriller about survival of a nuclear disaster has won the first European Novel of the Year award. The award is sponsored by Mandarin Books and Publishing News. Delarue has written a biography of Edgar Allan Poe and six other novels. He refuses to acknowledge Swiss neutrality as a symbol of democracy.
