Freedom beckons beyond Chinese bullets
Article Abstract:
At least 5,000 Tibetans flee from Chinese oppression in their own country every year. Many make the dangerous journey across the Himalayas in winter, when there are few Chinese patrols. They feel that the hardship of the journey is worthwhile if they are subsequently able to meet the Dalai Lama in exile in northern India. In some cases, children are sent from the country to be educated in India, as the Chinese authorities in Tibet are trying to eliminate the Tibetan language and culture.

Re-educated, but not suppressed
Article Abstract:
China is despatching Communist 're-educators' to Tibetan monasteries in an effort to eliminate the influence of the Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled spiritual and political leader. Monks are being asked to reject the Dalai Lama and the goal of restoring independent to Tibet. However, they are refusing to do so, thus risking arrest. China still believes that wiping out the Buddhist faith in the monasteries will be the best way to eliminate it among ordinary Tibetans.

Peking's poison fails to touch Tibetan hearts
Article Abstract:
There is strong resentment in Tibet against China, which is attempting to influence political and religious matters in Tibet. China has put forward an alternative Panchen Lama, or spiritual leader, to the one selected by the exiled Dalai Lama, and this has served to heighten the tension between China and Tibet. China seems to have misjudged the importance to Tibetans of the Dalai Lama and Panchen Lama.
