Good ol' boys in the hood
Article Abstract:
It is important to develop a distinctive musical style, according to songwriter Dan Penn, who emphasizes that he has always sought to be different from mainstream rock music. He and fellow songwriter Spooner Oldham were able to establish close links with black music, but Oldham feels that they lost these links following the assassination of Martin Luther King in 1968, which led to black riots and militancy. Penn feels that their experience could be of great assistance to a young singer.

Healing old wounds with acts of violence
Article Abstract:
The harsh wartime experiences of actor Lee Marvin were reflected in his subsequent film roles. He saw many colleagues killed during the second world war as he fought as a Marine. These experiences left him wanting to act in parts showing the glory of man. He did this, but in a cinema of violence. The 1967 film 'Point Blank,' which has now been re-released, was a direct reflection of the fact that Marvin himself was shot during the second world war and nearly killed.
