Where the money goes
Article Abstract:
UK government funding councils are to make available 3 billion pounds sterling for university research work in the period 1996-2000. The money is allocated according to the research ranking of the individual university, so it is vital that the university ensures that the standard of its research work does not decline. For the 1996 research spending round, the names of 55,893 academics have been put forward, up by 11% from 1992, and 192 institutions are seeking research funding, 20 more than in 1992.

White-collar proles
Article Abstract:
Many of the UK's universities and colleges are increasingly having to employ lecturers and researchers on part-time or short-term contracts because of funding problems. The pay of lecturers and researchers has now fallen a long way behind that of civil servants and lawyers, with whom they used to have pay parity, and some observers feel that academics are now becoming the new white-collar working class. Academics feel that they are undervalued, and their morale is therefore very low.

Degrees: compare and contrast
Article Abstract:
The inquiry into the future of higher education in the UK being undertaken by Sir Ron Dearing will include an investigation of the costs of educating an undergraduate in various countries across the world compared with the costs in the UK. It will also compare costs at various higher education institutions within the UK. Some observers believe that expanding higher education in the UK has meant that funds are spread more thinly, thus reducing quality.
