GPs play safe on prescriptions
Article Abstract:
The Association of British Pharmaceutical Industries (ABPI) and the Office of Health Economics think that patients are not prescribed new drugs because of government aims to keep drug bills low. Human growth hormone made by Lilly Industries and erythropoietin made by Cilag are two new drugs underused in Britain. The Centre for Health Economics at York University and the King's Fund Institute make the case that alternative treatments may be far cheaper. Glaxo has been referred to the EC for setting high prices, for the migraine drug Imigran, the asthma drug Serevent and an anti-emetic, Zofran.

Slow down! That extra five minutes could save a child
Article Abstract:
Department of Transport research shows that speed accounts for many child deaths in traffic accidents. Seven in 10 accidents happen in side-streets where motorists try to save time. Children have an 83% probability of dying if hit by a vehicle at 45 mph, but only a 5% chance at 20 mph. Studies in 1990 showed that area schemes could be beneficial and costs would be recouped within three years. The London Borough of Hillingdon, England, has prioritised road safety. They plan chicanes, uneven road surfaces and plateaux.

With a little help from their friends
Article Abstract:
Challney Girls' High School, Luton, England, uses peer tutoring to teach reading as 80% of its pupils are Asian, with English as their second language. In 1989 many of them had English reading ages of seven or eight at the age of 11. Eighty 15- or 16-year-old girls tutor 80 pupils, and there is a waiting list of voluntary tutors. They work for about 15 minutes four mornings a week. Tutors are given some basic instruction in teaching. They improve their own learning as tutoring boosts their self-confidence.
