New Law Society rules will require that all practising lawyers must participate in continuing education (CE) after Nov 1 1998, the first stage beginning on Nov 1 1992 when 20 hours CE a year must be undertaken. Legal Network Television (LNT) will broadcast two half-hour programmes a week on the BBC's Select Service to augment in-house training sessions. Television Education Network (TEN), which provides 11 video tapes and background material a year, is popular and cheaper than outside courses, presents information in a different medium from paper and is lively and absorbable.

One firm's cringe is another's pride

Solicitors may have a marketing strategy which includes sponsorship to raise their profile, to entertain clients or for recruitment. Academic sponsorship is favoured for status and recruitment. Corporate entertainment is too expensive to create a good image. Benefits are hard to calculate but patronage of the arts and donating to charities are popular. Marketing to increase existing business or attract new clients is a new approach in Britain but common in America.

Article Abstract:

London law firms are overstaffed with articled clerks who have completed their training, so not all are offered jobs. Less new recruits are taken on. Increasing numbers of non-law graduates apply for vacancies in law. Varied experience among staff is beneficial. Firms fund recruits because of the reduction in local authority grants. The Law Society has registered over 1,000 people looking for articles but only single figures of vacancies.
