Film editor and director Gene Fowler worked in the cutting department at Fox while studying at the University of Southern California. He cut his first film, 'Thanks a Million,' in 1935. He became a favourite editor of director Fritz Lang, and won an Oscar for the US Army documentary 'Seeds of Destiny' in 1945. He established himself as a director with the 1952 television series 'China-Smith.' He became particularly well known for his work on 'I Was a Teenage Werewolf.'

Shirley Clarke
Article Abstract:
Film director Shirley Clarke showed interest in modern dance at an early age, and began to devise ballets at the age of 17. She studied film-making with Hans Richter at the City College of New York, and in 1953 produced her first film. One of her most experimental films was 'Bridges-Go-Round,' made in 1959. The 1967 film 'Portrait of Jason' is regarded by many as her best film, but she is also well known for 'The Connection' and 'The Cool World.'

Pauline Kael

Film critic Pauline Kael was born in Petaluma, CA, in 1919. She first wrote film criticism in her mid-1930s, and reviewed films for The New Yorker for more than 20 years.
