Generals fear 'latent danger' of communism
Article Abstract:
There has been rioting in Jakarta, Indonesia, and soldiers are now ready to shoot anyone who causes trouble. The people are becoming disillusioned with the autocratic government of President Suharto, who has been in power since the 1960s. Lieutenant-General Syarwan Hamid believes that the people want to remove the present government and set up their own. Supporters of the leader of the Indonesian Democratic Party, (PDI), Megawati Sukarnoputri, who has been replaced, occupied party headquarters, but were evicted, which led to the riots.

Tokyo climbs the stairway to hell
Article Abstract:
Scientists believe that seismological data indicates that a major earthquake could occur in the Tokai area, south-west of Tokyo, Japan. The last earthquake in region, which registered 8.4 on the Richter scale, took place in Dec 1854. Unusual seismic events which historical records indicate as having preceded earthquakes in the region have become more common, and there are also indications that the rate at which the earth's crust is sinking has slowed down during the 1990s. This can sometimes be a precursor to an earthquake.
