Global warming is here, experts agree
Article Abstract:
Pollution has caused permanent changes to the earth's climate, according to the United Nation's inter-governmental panel on climate change (IPCC). Temperatures have generally been higher in the 1980s and 1990s than in any period since temperature records were first kept, and this trend looks set to continue into the 21st century. Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, two of the largest oil producing countries in the world, have been keen to limit the impact of this new report, as they fear that crude oil consumption will decline if governments begin to take global warming seriously.

Putting the lid on Britain's swelling dustbins
Article Abstract:
UK Secretary of State for the Environment in 1990 Chris Patten set a target of recycling 25% of domestic rubbish by 2000. Most waste in landfill is bad for the environment, creating methane gas, which adds to global warming. Half of UK households do not recycle any refuse. Local council programmes could reduce rubbish needing disposal by 80% per home. Recycling of cans and bottles has improved, with over 12,000 bottle banks in the country. German laws have caused a slump in UK waste paper recycling.

Dounreay dilemma of sunken atomic junkyard
Article Abstract:
The UK Atomic Energy Authority is to present proposals for making the radioactive waste shaft at Dounreay, Scotland, permanently safe to the government by the end of 1997. The priority, whatever the solution selected, will be to ensure that there is no danger of a chemical explosion or an uncontrollable nuclear chain-reaction. The shaft, which is 200 ft deep and filled with water, is situated in a cliff-top, and will be breached by the sea in around 200 years of no action is taken to secure it.
