Canny Tamils embrace chance for peace
Article Abstract:
More than 30,000 Tamils have been killed during the 12-year ethnic war with the government of Sri Lanka, and many have welcomed the recent ceasefire. Both sides now believe that there is a chance of a lasting peace agreement, but realise that the current talks must not be allowed to collapse, as it would then be many years before a similar stage would be reached again. Concessions have been made, but the Tamil Tigers are still taking a tough line, calling for the government to lift its ban on a number of crucial items.

He wanted to kill our babies for being girls
Article Abstract:
Magheswari Ramaswami's husband told her to kill their twins because they were girls. This custom is very common in rural communities in Tamil Nadu as girls need a dowry. Magheswari's family protected her wishes to keep her babies. Her caste, Gounders, would not allow her to remarry. Middle-class women have abortions if they discover the foetus to be female. Chief Minister Jayalalitha organised the cradle scheme for baby girls to be looked after by the government and adopted rather than murdered.

The veil of tears
Article Abstract:
The arrival of the Taliban militia in Kabul, Afghanistan has had a severe impact of the lives of the city's residents. Women are being required to wear a garment which covers them completely, and are not permitted to show even their eyes or their ankles. Many women find this restriction very difficult to accept. They emphasise their belief in Islam, but point out that it does not say in the Koran that women must cover their face.
