Global warming: the jury's still out
Article Abstract:
Scientists remain largely unwilling to state categorically that emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are responsible for the increase in temperatures around the world which have been seen in recent years. This is because the measurement of temperatures remains inaccurate and because there is only limited understanding of how human activities are altering the climate. It will be necessary to develop further computer models before scientists can be more certain about the causes of global warming.

Taking the temperature of an ailing planet
Article Abstract:
Ground-based measurement of global warming show a faster temperature rise than satellite measurements. Measurements on the ground are close to urban areas, which have warming effects themselves, and they are land-based, ignoring the fact that 2/3 of the planet is ocean. Climatologists attempt to allow for this in their observations. Weather satellites use infra-red or microwave radiometers and balloon-borne instruments to produce accurate observations.

Pinatubo's summer washout
Article Abstract:
Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines erupted in Jun 1991, producing dust and sulphur dioxide which affected the climate world-wide. Computer models predicted this, so they may also be correct about global warming. Analysis shows a tendency for cooler weather in eastern North America and north-western Europe six-18 months after eruption. Research into the eruption of Toba in Sumatra 73,500 years ago suggest it aided the ice age.
