Go on, says Updike, tell me a story
Article Abstract:
John Updike is a novelist who has started a story that Amazon, the booksellers is inviting Internet users to continue. The results show that there is a gap between dreams of what the Internet can achieve and the reality of most contributions. Selection and editing tend to be more difficult in the context of Internet democracy. A gap between experts and the lay public could emerge on some Web sites and this could undermine the democratic element. Online writing also demands a particular style which tends to be less leisurely than the style of Updike.

Why our politicians need to get a life
Article Abstract:
Readers in the UK are generally not attracted in large numbers to biographies of politicians. However, publishers still produce a considerable number of these books. The main reason why political biography is no longer attractive is that the modern political system does not allow the emergence of strong statesmen with clearly individual characteristics. Nowadays, politicians are perceived by the general public as being at the mercy of the political system, rather than moulding it to their own will.

Watch out, there's a plagiarist about
Article Abstract:
Authors sometimes commit plagiarism innocently, either forgetting the source of ideas or reproducing passages from another author's work because they have a photographic memory. In other cases, however, plagiarism is not committed innocently. Where plagiarism is deliberate, it is often indicates some personal distress and is a plea for help. It is a crime which involves publication, and it is therefore clear that the culprit wants to be caught.
