Women and maths - how it all starts to add up

Article Abstract:

The proportion of women studying mathematics at undergraduate level in the UK is extremely low, and women also tend to avoid courses which have a mathematics content. Academics attribute this to misguided approaches to the teaching of mathematics in school. In general, girls perform as well as boys in mathematics up to GCSE level, but fall behind boys after this point. This problem is being addressed by the Open University, which has launched a foundation course in mathematics. All mathematical ideas are introduced in context, and particular success has been seen from the use of a graphic calculator.

Trust me, I'm an OU doctor

Article Abstract:

The Universities of Plymouth and Exeter, England, have linked with the Open University to bid to set up the Peninsula Medical School, which will use innovative training methods such as distance learning. A key feature of this initiative will be attracting students from different educational backgrounds. A similar initiative, linking the Open University with the University of Leeds School of Medicine, will assist in training doctors in West Yorkshire. This initiative will particularly seek to attract students from ethnic minority communities.
