Teaching assistants at American universities attend two-day courses in teaching undergraduates. This is intended to provide a minimum standard of teaching and to ensure that assistants do not spend all their time on research. The assistants are taught to detach themselves from the undergraduates and to have an intellectual rather than a personal approach. A teacher should explain his background and availability in a friendly fashion Students are consumers of education with a right to expect value for money.
