Goodbye, Mister Thwackum
Article Abstract:
Corporal Punishment has been banned in British independent schools, in line with the School Standards and Framework Act of 1998. Caning was already banned from 1986 in state schools. Caning children has been part of the British tradition, and this applies to religious as well as secular schools. There are still 40 independent Christian schools which argue that they should be permitted to cane children in order to teach them moral values. This is an archaic belief, and the idea that unbelievers could be dealt with by physical punishment disappeared in most places with the Third Crusade.
